They say, I say Activity

1 min read

Build a stronger argument around your topic by going out onto the internet and finding a source that disagrees with you (They Say) and one that agrees (I Say). After finding both sources, write two paragraphs where you are in an active conversation. The setup you should follow is below:

First and foremost, provide your thesis statement (be specific to your argument)

Paragraph One: They Say (100 words)

  1. Introduce the opposing view on the topic (counterargument)
  2. Introduce the title of the opposing article and the author (top piece of the quote sandwich)
  3. Insert the quote (middle of the quote sandwich)
  4. Unpack the quote and what they are saying through your chosen quote (bottom of the quote sandwich)
  5. Refer their stance back to your claim at the beginning of the paragraph

Paragraph Two: I Say (100 words)

  1. Introduce your stance on the topic and why you believe the previous article is wrong
  2. Introduce the title of the agreeing article and the author (top piece of the quote sandwich)
  3. Insert the quote (middle of the quote sandwich)
  4. Unpack the quote and what they are saying through your chosen quote (bottom of the quote sandwich)
  5. Refer to your stance and why this quote backs up your argument
